孔雀王朝阿育王

阿育王(公元前303年至前232年),是印度孔雀王朝的皇帝,統治幾乎所有的印度次大陸,被許多人視為印度最偉大的皇帝。他擴展了錢德拉古普(Chandragupta)的帝國,統治着西到今阿富汗,東到今孟加拉國的領土,囊括整個印度次大陸,除了今天的泰米爾納德邦,卡納塔克邦和喀拉拉邦的部分地區。帝國的首都是Pataliputra(在今天的Patna位於Magadha),省會在Taxila和Ujjain。

他皈依了佛教。他因阿育王的支柱和法令派遣佛教僧侶到斯里蘭卡和中亞以及建立紀念碑而聞名,這些紀念碑標誌着釋迦牟尼佛生活中的幾個重要地點。

除阿育王發令外,關於他的傳記信息還依賴於幾個世紀後寫的傳説,例如2世紀的Ashokavadana(“ Ashoka的敍述 ”,Divyavadana的一部分)以及斯里蘭卡文字Mahavamsa(《大紀事》)。現代印度共和國的標誌是對阿育王獅子首都的改編。他的梵文名字“ 阿育王 ”的意思是“無痛,無憂愁”。Ashokavadana也提到了他對名字與Saraca asoca樹或“ Ashoka樹”的聯繫。
